Habitat & Wellbeing · Life by Design

Our base is more than machinery. It is a comfortable town that blends work and play as any good town does. Our crews can work well, relax well and stay well.

Space Base

This shows our central biodome designed for peak light, air quality and Earth feel. In the event of an asteroid warning metal sections deploy. The spines receive signals from Earth and transmit them to the base (which is mainly underground).

You will see plenty of communicators around the base, we are only one key press away!

Below are some of the readings for the base, they update in real time. It's like you are already there!

Outside Temp · Surface
-55 °C
Outside O₂ Level
0.13 % of Earth
Distance to Earth
140 million km
Signal Delay (one-way)
7.8 min

Design Intent · From Survival to Belonging

Critical data - oxygen, pressure, radiation, power - is displayed clearly. Your colleagues see status at a glance, any issues will be immediately show.

Floor lighting guides residents at all times to guide flow. During incidents extra lights will show the way. In partial-g, controls give haptic feedback so you know something has been completed.

Natural lighting and materials make you feel at home. Plants provide a natural atmosphere. Personally chosen scents and sounds follow you around the town.

Long-lasting modules give reassurance, every detail down to handle textures and airlock sound cues have been designed simply to make you feel at home.

Pressure seals will hum as they lock behind you for your safety and mental wellbeing. Corridors are wide to optimise oversight and circulation.

Emotion Map · Quiet, Social, Risk

Peaceful spaces The greenhouse dome provides your park. A library pod on each floor, designed for you to decompress and reflect.

Social spaces Social floor with restaurants, shops, a pub, a cinema and theatre. We provide the space, you provide the community.

Isolating spaces Solo spaces for calm after a busy shift. Observatories for you to enjoy Mars, explore the planet and the solar system.

Our AI watches how spaces feel to different generations and we change accordingly. We treat your emotions as signal, not an afterthought.

Our Hybrid Sensor Network is made up of many different detectors and sensors around the Base designed to maximise your comfort and safety.

Systems Supporting Wellbeing

Closed-Loop Comfort Air, water and thermal are carefully regulated for efficiency and human comfort. Waste heat warms communal zones, humidity is adjusted for plant health.

Human–AI Oversight AIs run routine ops but humans are in charge. James (our AI) explains why an action is recommended, not what to maintain trust and agency.

Meaning & Memory Spaces have stories. Past crews have decorated public areas with their creativity, and place names such as Turing Hall remind us who we are.

The air filtration across the Base changes constantly depending on the concentration of people, the speed of walkers and how much vegetation there is.

Ethics · Comfort Without Coercion

Hostile or “unpleasant” design can creep into closed environments but we strive for no coercive discomfort.

We have found almost all our crews have been self-regulating, when this is not the case we use prompts and consentful nudges. Restricted zones signage — no deterrent sounds or deliberately awkward seating, it is not needed.

All our monitoring is safety-first and our crew have the right to challenge any decisions.

We have various behavioural monitoring corridors which monitor walking patterns, loitering and sudden changes in movement. These are there for safety and improved flow.
